Today we are talking about a topic that has spread in the past few days, which is the monkeypox virus. In this article we talk about what monkeypox is.What was the monkeypox outbreak? When was the monkeypox virus discovered? What are the vaccines used for monkeypox, and what are the treatments for monkeypox?

    About Monkeypox

Monkeypox is a uncommon ailment that is brought about with the aid of contamination with monkeypox virus. Monkeypox virus belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the household Poxviridae. The Orthopoxvirus genus additionally consists of variola virus (which reasons smallpox), vaccinia virus (used in the smallpox vaccine), and cowpox virus.

    monkeypox pandemic:

Since 13 May 2022, cases of monkeypox have been reported to WHO from 12 Member States that are not endemic for monkeypox virus, across three WHO regions. Epidemiological investigations are ongoing, however, reported cases thus far have no established travel links to endemic areas. Based on currently available information, cases have mainly but not exclusively been identified amongst men who have sex with men (MSM) seeking care in primary care and sexual health clinics.

    When was monkeypox discovered?

Monkeypox was first discovered in 1958 when two outbreaks of a pox-like disease occurred in colonies of monkeys kept for research, hence the name ‘monkeypox.’ The first human case of monkeypox was recorded in 1970 in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) during a period of intensified effort to eliminate smallpox.

    monkeypox vaccine:

Made by the Danish company Bavarian Nordic and named Jynneos, the vaccine uses a live version of the smallpox virus that has been engineered so that it cannot replicate in the body or cause infection, but can still activate the immune system to mount defenses against both the smallpox and monkeypox viruses to protect people from getting infected.

    monkeypox treatment:
Cases of human monkeypox are rarely seen outside of west and central Africa. There are few information related to viral kinetics or the period of viral shedding and no licensed treatments. Two oral drugs, brincidofovir and tecovirimat, have been accepted for therapy of smallpox and have tested efficacy towards monkeypox in animals.
